How important is Your Router in Gaming?

Curious if anyone has any experience upgrading their router and seeing better performance from ping times, latency, etc.

Reason being: I see "gaming" routers being advertised. Couple of examples are the R7800 from NETGEAR (http://ift.tt/1psvWP1), the RT-AC88U from ASUS (http://ift.tt/1UioD6x), and Netduma (https://netduma.com).

Netduma, specifically, even says they can "fix lag." Really?

Problem is - these routers are expensive! So I'm hesitant to want to even try to pick one up.

Looking for insight and advice. Thanks!
