As we're getting closer to Christmas and especially on the back of Black Friday/Cyber Monday, where many would have bought their console - something you hear about every year is that people don't realize that once you buy a new console, plug it in and go to play, it will require a software update to be used.
To save the annoyance and having impatient children, take the console out of the box, hook it up to the internet, and allow it to perform the update before you wrap it up.
Before anyone says it, this isn't a PC v Console debate and merely informing people that might not have realized.
Edit:
Something more to add - also consider buying some single player games that don't rely on an internet connection in case of any issues with networks crashing, being hacked, or other issues that they've faced in recent years.
Edit edit:
As others have said here, it's also a good idea to allow any game updates there may be.
